The US Apricot Season is Coming!
Posted on April 20th, 2015
Apricot season for the U.S. will soon be upon us
Originally from China, apricots arrived in Europe via the Middle East. Virginia is credited with the first apricot tree on US soil in 1720. But it wasn’t until the late 1700’s when Spanish missions made the introduction of the apricot more formal in the US. The Californian climate was sunny and dry, ideally suited for the fruit.
Apricots can be consumed fresh or dried. They are the favorite of bakers, jam makers and the liquor industry. The pits can be used as bitter almonds or distilled into oil as well.
Californian and Mexican apricots ripen May through August. Fruits with a rich orange color and soft to the touch have the most antioxidants and nutrition. Vitamin A, potassium and fiber are all great side effects of enjoying a juicy apricot.
